The name Queenstown has two theories, the most common being that it was gold prospectors, captivated by the beauty of the surrounding mountains and rivers, who hit upon its name when they pronounced it "a town fit for a Queen". The other is that it was named Queenstown after Queenstown in Ireland.

Queenstown has many different options available to everyone. Choose to relax by the lake, take a tour of the region, board a cruise to Milford Sounds, or for the more adventurous types, participate in extreme sports, such as bungy jumping (Queenstown is the home of the original Bungy jump) and a jet boat ride on the river.
